Writing Architecture: First Session | Place Setting

  • Museum of Design Atlanta 1315 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA, 30309 United States (map)

In-person | Ages 16+

Writing is expression, but it is also a process for exploring the world around us. We write to find out what we know. In this series of three workshops, we’ll explore how three architectural concepts — place, plan, and tectonics — can teach us about the craft of writing and vice versa. To do so, we’ll practice looking closely and writing about our experiences.‌

Architects today talk about “place” as much as they talk about buildings themselves. But what is a place? What gives it its placeness?

In this session, we’ll explore these questions by looking at Evelyn Hofer’s photographs of different places within larger cities and listening to the sounds of public space in Toronto. Then we’ll write, setting our favorite places in Atlanta into words.

Recommended preparation:

  • Familiarize yourself with the work of Evelyn Hofer; you can read about her recent exhibition at the High Museum of Art here and here.

  • Listen to Inhabit episode 3.1: “What’s Public About Public Space?”

  • Bring to the workshop a photograph of Evelyn Hofer's or a different image that captures something meaningful to you about Atlanta’s built environment. Be prepared to share!
