SHOUT! A Poster Making Workshop

  • Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) 1315 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA, 30309 United States (map)

In-person at MODA

About This Event

College and university students are invited to join MODA for a workshop with Tré Seals, founder of Vocal Type Co and the team from Civilization.

We’ll kick things off with SHOUT!, a presentation by Michael Ellsworth and Raya Leary of Civilization, which examines how visual communication has been the rallying cry to address some of society’s most complex and pressing issues from the anti-nuclear movement, Black liberation, AIDS advocacy, abortion access, to environmental justice. We’ll outline five social movements, their origins, impact, and eventual adoption into popular culture.

Then Tré Seals will lead a hands-on workshop in which you’ll learn about his process, how typography tells BIPOC design histories, and how he creates typefaces and then use that knowledge to create a poster!

  • Tré Seals
Tré Seals is the founder of Vocal Type, a revolutionary type foundry that redefines the intersection of design and culture. With a mission to diversify the design industry, Seals draws inspiration from historical events, figures, and movements to create typefaces that amplify marginalized voices. His work has been featured globally, and his innovative approach challenges traditional design narratives by infusing them with social and cultural relevance. Seals is also the author of Dream in Color: 30 Posters of Power by 30 Black Creatives, a book that celebrates the intersection of design and activism.

    Michael Elsworth
Michael is the co-founder and principal of the design practice Civilization. Their studio leverages the radical potential of design to address social issues, expand cultural dialogue, and serve communities. Their decentralized team, spread across the US and Europe, builds identities, websites, campaigns, environmental graphics, exhibitions, and experiences. In 2018 their studio received the Smithsonian’s National Design Award for Communication Design.
