About This Event:

Join MODA and Scraplanta for an afternoon of stitching, storytelling, and resistance.

Embroidery has never been just decoration. It’s a tool of protest, a reclamation of space, and a way to make quiet thoughts visible. This hands-on workshop embraces that radical potential—teaching fundamental techniques while inviting participants to create bold textiles statements that confront, disrupt, or demand change.

Held during Mental Health Awareness Month, this gathering also offers space for reflection and cathartic making.

Participants will:

  • Learn foundational embroidery techniques—or apply skills they already know. No experience needed.

  • Work with reclaimed and repurposed materials provided by Scraplanta.

  • Stitch messages, symbols, and designs that speak to power, identity, and collective care.

  • Explore the subversive history of textiles as resistance, especially within marginalized communities.

  • Experience the grounding, therapeutic act of making by hand.

All materials are provided. Bring your voice. Stitch something bold.

About Jonelle Dawkins of Scraplanta

Jonelle Dawkins is a fiber and mixed-media artist from Decatur, GA. She studied Fashion Merchandising at the University of Georgia (UGA) and discovered creative reuse during grad school at North Carolina A&T (NCAT). She started as Scraplanta’s Executive Director in November 2021 after working at the Creative Reuse Center in North Carolina.

About Scraplanta

Scraplanta Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability, arts education, and creative expression in Atlanta. Through its creative reuse center, Scraplanta collects and redistributes donated art and craft materials—offering them to the public at 50–75% off retail prices—to reduce waste and remove financial barriers for educators, artists, and makers. With over 166,692 pounds of materials diverted from landfills, Scraplanta empowers the community to turn “trash” into treasures, from movie sets to lampshades. Proceeds support accessible workshops and programs where volunteer artists share skills like bookbinding, collage, and sewing—proving that art can be a tool for joy, healing, and liberation.
