About This Event:
Are you passionate about textiles and recycling? So are we!
Join local textile artist Sayma Hossain, creator of Going to Hmart, want anything? (pictured above), for a hands-on evening of creativity inspired by our Threads of Change workshop series! Whether you're a seasoned maker or trying your hand at something new, this engaging session will show you how textile art can transform single-use plastics into something extraordinary.
What to Expect:
Discover art in the unexpected: Learn how to turn recyclable materials into stunning works of art.
Explore innovative techniques: Gain insight into Sayma’s process of incorporating single-use plastics into her designs.
Get creative: Using a wooden loom frame, yarn, rope, pre-washed plastics, textiles, and other recycled materials, weave a unique piece that tells a sustainability story.
By the end of the evening, you’ll leave with a completed piece, fresh ideas to fuel your creativity, and a new community of fellow makers.
All materials are included. Just bring your creativity and a willingness to try something new! *Participants can bring in their own pre-washed single-use plastic items. Ex. chip bags, raman bag, etc.
About Samaya Hossain:
Sayma Hossain is a textile artist who navigates with found objects, quilt making, installations, and tapestry weavings. Her practice revolves around repurposing recycled materials through traditional textiles techniques. Growing up at the cultural intersection of Bangladesh and the American South, her work reflects on the relationship of garmentry in society as it relates to fast fashion and the nonlinear journey of the Muslim experience. She received her BFA in Studio Arts with a concentration in Textile Design from Georgia State University. Currently, her work/series is on food waste and weaving together a plastic quilt on what we may consume regularly.
Threads of Change Workshop Series
Threads of Change explores the connection between nature and fiber design through large-scale installations that reveal how fiber arts tell stories, inspire change, and deepen our connection to the natural world.
To complement the exhibition, MODA will host hands-on workshops led by local artists, Kimani Johnson, Sayma Hossain, Camisha Butler, and Amanda Banks, whose work reflects these themes. Open to beginners and experienced makers alike, these workshops offer a chance to create, connect, and explore how fiber design can address environmental and social challenges.
The series concludes with a group discussion moderated by a guest from Atlanta’s design community. Join us to discover how fiber design inspires creativity and change!
