Join local fiber artist and MODA staff member Kimani Johnson, creator of Paper Weaving 04 (pictured above), for a hands-on evening of creativity as part of our Threads of Change-inspired workshop series!
Perfect for all skill levels, this engaging session blends the art of weaving with the magic of collage to explore history, texture, and design in exciting new ways with a tactile approach.
What to Expect:
Discover the rich cultural history of weaving and how contemporary artists are reimagining this timeless craft.
Experiment with textures, patterns, colors, and found images in a guided, hands-on activity.
Create your own unique woven artwork that combines tradition with modern design.
By the end of the evening, you’ll leave with a completed piece, fresh ideas to fuel your creativity, and a new community of fellow makers.
About Kimani Johnson:
Kimani Johnson is an Atlanta-based textile artist and graduate of Georgia State University with a BFA in textiles. Their work explores themes of Black erotic autonomy, using vintage Black magazines to celebrate sensuality and empowerment. Through their art, Kimani Johnson invites viewers to connect with the rich complexities of identity and Black sexuality.
Threads of Change Workshop Series
Threads of Change explores the connection between nature and fiber design through large-scale installations that reveal how fiber arts tell stories, inspire change, and deepen our connection to the natural world.
To complement the exhibition, MODA will host hands-on workshops led by local artists, Kimani Johnson, Sayma Hossain, Camisha Butler, and Amanda Banks, whose work reflects these themes. Open to beginners and experienced makers alike, these workshops offer a chance to create, connect, and explore how fiber design can address environmental and social challenges.
The series concludes with a group discussion moderated by a guest from Atlanta’s design community. Join us to discover how fiber design inspires creativity and change!
