Graphic Design Studio: Designing Animated Graphics and GIFs with Canva

Virtual | Ages 13-18

Join MODA for a virtual Afterschool Studio in which you’ll learn to make animated graphics and GIFs using Canva. 

In this virtual studio, we’ll dive into the principles of design, exploring how color palettes, typography, and layout allow for dynamic visual storytelling. Then, we’ll learn the basic principles of animation as we explore the mechanics of movement and timing. Finally, designers we’ll discuss careers that involve graphic design, animation, and visual communication. 

We’ll share our work at the end of the studio and practice giving kind and constructive feedback!


In this Afterschool Studio, you’ll . . .

  • Create animated graphics and GIFs using Canva's animation tools

  • Learn the basics of animation

  • Explore design concepts for animation

  • Learn to express thoughts and ideas using a visual language

  • Enhance critical thinking skills through design analysis and decision-making

  • Build creative confidence 

  • Collaborate with peers to gain different perspectives and refine your designs

  • Gain insights into potential careers involving animation and design

Requirements:

  • A device with a steady Internet connection

  • A Zoom account

  • A free Canva account

  • Earline Johnson is an artist who works in sculpture, ceramics, and graphic design. She owns her own small business, Early Girl Crafts, and she holds a B.A. in Fine Arts with a minor in Art History from Old Dominion University. Her work experience includes Big Brothers Big Sisters, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, Atlanta Public Schools, and the Barry Art Museum.

  • This event is virtual and will be held over Zoom; participants will receive a link prior to the start of the workshop. If you do not see the link in your inbox, please email blaire@museumofdesign.org.

  • MODA reserves the right to cancel a program if the minimum enrollment requirements are not met, but don't worry: should MODA have to cancel, we will gladly issue a full refund to all registrants (if applicable). If you need to cancel your plans for any reason, we kindly request that you notify us at least 7 days prior to the event start.

  • Designers with different styles of learning or special needs are welcome in MODA public programs. We will be able to most effectively help everyone learn and enjoy this experience if we know about those needs in advance of the program.
