About This Event

Join us for Drift the Map: South-View Cemetery & Lakewood Heights for a free walk and talk with Joel & Mira and special guest leaders:

During the walk, we will traverse Atlanta’s historic South-View Cemetery—the oldest African-American cemetery in Atlanta and the resting place of civil rights leaders John Lewis, Julian Bond, Hank Aaron, John Wesley Dobbs, and Alonzo Herndon.

We will then make our way down the Lakewood Heights railroad tracks stopping to eat at El Progreso #14, the much-loved taqueria destination in the back of a grocery store known by aficionados as “Prison Tacos” named for its proximity to the United States Penitentiary.

About DRIFT THE MAP

Drift the Map is a series of free artist-led walks co-facilitated by a father-daughter team, artists Joel Silverman, Mira Silverman and co-founder Darin Givens, in cooperation with ThreadATL and Museum of Design Atlanta. About once a month, we explore Atlanta neighborhoods and talk about urbanism, ecology, history, architecture, and public art. Every session has an experimental format, and no two walks are alike. We always begin in a different neighborhood and invite stakeholders from the community along as special guests and then explore arbitrary routes guided by our conversations or participants' personal connections to the place.

This series seeks to explore the mythogeography of Atlanta. Places have multiple meanings embedded into the fabric of their histories. By exploring the way the city defines itself through urban legends, discovering the official histories enshrined in street and neighborhood names and monuments, and researching the ways politically motivated encoding was introduced into the city grid through redlining policies, street names, and allocation of resources these walks meander through human stories and the spaces they inhabit.

  • About Joel Silverman

Joel Silverman is an artist, historian, and curator whose work uncovers stories of community resistance and justice through counter-monuments—digital projections and immersive installations that challenge dominant narratives. His site-specific works, activated by motion and sound, serve as urban archaeology, reviving lost histories and engaging audiences in reenacting moments of liberation. A former lawyer and political organizer, his approach is shaped by democracy work and the Civil Rights Movement’s vision of a “beloved community.” Silverman has been at the forefront of digital art conservation and interactive storytelling, merging law, cartography, and critical theory into narratives of power and advocacy. His contributions to Atlanta’s arts scene began in 1997 when he successfully overturned the city’s ban on busking. He later worked with Georgia leaders to integrate arts funding and environmental justice into regional planning. Since leaving law at 30, he has pursued art and photography while teaching at Emory, Georgia State, and Agnes Scott, focusing on social justice in photography, printmaking, and filmmaking.

    About Cynthia Jennings

Cynthia Jennings (aka "The Cemetery Nerd") is a photographer, researcher, and cemetery historian who gets lost in rabbit holes and back roads with equal measure.

    About Ann Hill Bond

Ann Hill Bond is an Emmy-winning journalist and Chair of the Fulton County Remembrance Coalition.

    About Winifred Watts Hemphill

Winifred Watts Hemphill serves as President of South-View Cemetery Association, founded in 1886, by six men who were all born enslaved. The cemetery, located in southeast Atlanta, is the final resting place of many notable figures who have made significant contributions to society. Hemphill is a graduate of Howard University and Howard University School of Law.
