Design Justice: Reimagining Community Through Minecraft

Virtual

Kids everywhere build incredible worlds in Minecraft. But what if this wildly popular sandbox game was used as a tool to achieve equity in urban design and planning?

That's what James Delaney, founder of Block by Block, is doing. Rooted in the belief that virtual worlds have the power to shape and improve our real-world environments, this remarkable foundation leverages the creativity of Minecraft to transform cities, one block at a time.

In collaboration with the UN and Mojang, Block by Block works closely with residents, urban planners, and architects, facilitating workshops and collaborative projects. These initiatives enable communities to actively participate in the design and transformation of their own neighborhoods, fostering a sense of ownership and pride.

Join us for a virtual talk in which James Delaney shares the work that Block x Block is doing across the globe, as well as the outcomes of a workshop he recently led at MODA in which students from the Spelman Innovation Lab and GSU reimagined neglected urban spaces alongside representatives from Sweet Auburn Works and Midtown Alliance.

Design Justice in the Virtual World is a series created by Brave Nu.

  • James is the founder and Managing Director of BlockWorks, a collective of designers, artists, and developers from around the world with a shared passion for Minecraft. BlockWorks has grown from an informal group to a global design studio that has pioneered the use of Minecraft as a design tool with film studios, marketing firms, and educational institutions. In 2016, James published Beautiful Minecraft, a compendium of stunning artworks built in the game by the BlockWorks team.

James graduated with a degree in Architecture from Cambridge University and pursues a particular interest in the correlation between architecture and video games. He is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and has given talks at the International Spatial Development Forum, The Bartlett School of Architecture, and the British Library, among others. James enjoys traveling; when in new cities he looks for hidden public spaces to explore.
