Hip Hop in Fashion

‌Hip-hop was born on the streets of New York in the 1970s and 1980s as an outsider movement. Tracksuits, chains, and Kangol hats were part of an early hip-hop uniform that has evolved and changed over the years, and now dominates dominate mainstream and high fashion. Interested in learning more?

Atlanta Sustainable Fashion Week, and Upscale Magazine presented a conversation about the evolution of hip-hop fashion, led by Dr. Courtney Hammonds. The conversation took place in MODA's galleries, where the exhibition Close to the Edge: The Birth of Hip-Hop Architecture is currently on view.

About Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds
Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds “The Dean of Fashion” is a forward-thinking and hands-on industry professional with 20 years of worldwide experience.

He started his career as a classroom teacher, transitioning to the fashion sector providing advisory support to a fast-growing multi-brand boutique.

After closing the boutique, Hammonds worked at Neiman Marcus, then, between 2010 and 2018 Dr. Hammonds served as Department Chair of the Fashion Program at The Art Institutes. Under his leadership, the program was awarded SACS accreditation and developed new academic programs including The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design (BFA).

Recently he was appointed fashion editor of Upscale Magazine. He is the author of five books covering fashion, style and philanthropy.
