How might we design sustainable housing solutions for the most vulnerable individuals in society?
Cottages at Hickory Crossing
bcWorkshop
2017
Dallas, TX
The Cottages at Hickory Crossing provide permanent housing and support services for 50 chronically unhoused citizens in Dallas. Built on a 3-acre site less than a half-mile from downtown, they are a model for sustainable urban living.
Each of the 50 cottage residences is 430 square feet. They incorporate on-site solar energy technologies and rainwater collection.
Homes are arranged in clusters of 6-8 units to create semi-public spaces or “micro-neighborhoods.
Designed to be a healing environment, the development includes common porches, a support-services building, and green space for recreation and shared activities.
